MEN! – How to avoid a Midlife crisis

June 2007

Alan DeanFor the past two years Agewell, an initiative funded by Sandwell Primary Care Trust, have offered a two day Midlife Future Planning course to all staff.  As people are now living longer the term midlife has changed.  It used to relate to people who were aged 35 - 40 but now is thought to by more focused on those who are approaching 50.

The course is part of the Primary Care Trust's training programme and themes covered included; finance, health, leisure and relationships.  All of the courses that have been run have been well attended with a majority of participants taking part based on recommendations from colleagues. However, to date only 2% of attendees to the midlife future planning course have been male.

Midlife Planning Coordinator Stuart Munger said, "A lot of information on the course I have passed on to male colleagues and family who have found it very useful and also it has given them a different perspective on the future, one of them has even changed his career path".

Alan Dean Head of the Joint Policy unit said, "Men usually avoid seeking advice at an early point in regard to their health and well being midlife planning is a positive way to take control of your future we have a positive scheme delivering the most up to date programme available in the country - I encourage you to take advantage of it change the habits of a lifetime - take control!".
