Older People having their say in their towns
|
Agewell, a Sandwell organisation which aims to promote a positive image of mid to later life and challenge age discrimination, has launched its local forums for older people in each of the six towns.
Agewell has been in existence for around ten years and is moving forward in its mission to support and enable older people to have a voice in the decisions that affect them, from transport to health, anti social behaviour to social care, leisure activities to ‘meals on wheels.’
These local forums enable older people to express their concerns about their own town and do something about them.
Already the forum in West Bromwich, lead by Older People Champion Bob Tidmarsh, has coordinated a group petition to Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Hospital Trust against the introduction of car parking charges at its hospitals for disabled drivers.
The Rowley Regis local forum has also been successful in building relationships with local organisations to raise awareness of older people issues.
John Allen MBE, the Chair of Agewell, said: “We very excited about the local forums in each of the six towns because it gives older people a say about their own area and enables them to be actively involved in making changes.”
