At the beginning of June 2008 the Agewell Midlife Planning Team and Agewell Volunteer Sandfra Tyrrell attended a conference in Brussels which was aimed at employment and older workers. Chris Ball, the Chief Executive of The Age and Employment Network (TAEN) and president of European Age Network UK recommended that we attend because of the work we do with TAEN.
AARP and the European Commission co-sponsored the international conference focusing on strategies for new demographics and to learn global innovative government, industry, and social partner strategies for addressing aging workforce issues.
Delegates came from around the world and speakers included representation from; European Trade Unions, European Government officials, US Government Director of Education accountability office, European Older Peoples Forum and the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.
At the discussion workshops we were able to put across what was happening in Sandwell, in particular to small companies and the lack of financial resources. Over the two days we were able to talk to other delegates and share ideas. One of the suggestions we made for future conferences was to include older workers as key speakers.
